Nirvana Gravel Relay-I thought that was the end for me...
#biggravelmiles #nirvanagravelrelay #gravelracing
Nirvana Gravel Relay was one hell of a day. What began as a casual non-competitive 110 mile ride, turned in to an absolute suffer fest. It was hot, humid, and hilly but the routes were absolutely stunning.

    Agree with other comments. I’ve had this happen probably a dozen times over 35 years of cycling. When your core gets to a certain temp, blood flow is restricted to your extremities and you are DONE! It only gets worse from there! It can be dangerous, I’m glad you’re ok!

    • @TysRides
      @TysRides 17 дней назад

      Thanks. I've delt with leg cramps a number of times as well. Never have I had cramps in my arms and other parts of my body like this. The arm cramps were probably as bad as the leg cramps. And you are right about the core getting warm. It was almost like I could feel how warm my body was and it was very scary. This was another good lesson for me to learn.

    not sure if you saw Dylan Johnson's Unbound recap, but he did some very interesting things for "heat management" as he called it. He carried multiple bottles of water, the purpose of which was strictly for dumping on his head. His drinking water was in a large USWE bladder, filled with icewater. He had a crew bringing him fresh bladders.

    as someone who owns this bike ill give my experience. 1. their customer service is actually amazing and they are easy to get in touch with. 2. the stock components are pretty meh... I immediately swapped out my derailure (sram rival) and my cassette (pg1130) because of chain drops and clunky shifting. With the sram additions the bike is surgical in its shifting and should honestly just come with these as a built in option while adjusting the specs on the order page. The HYDROLLIC brakes on the newest 4130s are good the older style mechanical ones have been quoted as being "irresponsibly dangerous".....take that for what it is. 3. Make sure you get your wheels tuned up right out of the gate. They WILL. NOT.. BE.. TRUE! No ifs ands or buts about it. Save yourself the hassle of many broken spokes. just get it done at the shop and ask that it be included in the set up fee. The bike is heavy but not horrendous...it is listed as CroMo but there is no information about the type of CM they use or butting etc. so I wouldn't expect Surly or better build quality however the frame hasn't given me any issues. and to cap it off... the stock seat sucks, the seat post is heavy as balls, the handlebars are decent and lastly the geometry for this bike is not exactly what id call the best for anything other than light gravel. In no ways should you be riding this as a mtb but you will pedal strike like mad even on pretty mellow gravel with just a few unexpected rocks. Would I buy this bike again? Probably not.... Is it good for a beginner.... maybe is it a nice bike to look at..... yeah it is.

    • @TysRides
      @TysRides 17 дней назад

      Makes sense. That's awesome feedback. I feel like this is the case for a lot of entry level bikes at this price point. If I was just getting in to cycling, I would probably look hard at the used market before buying new. So many great lightly used options with good builds for the price. And I would go even further and say and stock wheelset on any entry level bike needs to be replaced because eventually, spokes are going to start busting. It's only a matter of time. Especially if you ride a lot or are a bigger rider.

      @@TysRides I just don't understand why people can't get over themselves and think about how long it takes to make a video like this one. Besides your video, I really appreciate the people pointing out that not all custom bike builders in the US do the build, but rather they ship it to Taiwan or China to have it done. That's nonsense. I want to be able to talk to the guy/girl who is building my bike. That is LEGIT custom. If anyone knows any legit builders in Texas please let me know. I'm looking at CHUMBA out of Austin right now, but I'm not sure because that's the only one I know of. I would like to have someone in Texas to do my build so I can maybe go by while it's being built and see it while it's in the process. If Mark or Vince at CHUMBA read this, can I stop in and chat with you sometime, albeit briefly as I know you guys put in the work? Thank you again, Ty. Despite the negativity from some people, I hope you keep 'em coming. You can always hit me up if you are unsure about something. I meant to address that. So that van has two high-powered battery packs that could power pretty much anything you need for about two weeks off grid. There is an AC unit that can be attached inside the van that ran off the batteries while we rode. Lefty also made sure to park in the shade. The van was a cool 70 degrees the whole time while we rode. Now, obviously, those batteries won't run that AC for two weeks straight, but it will run the AC for a full day with no issues.

We hydrated well the day before the race and carried 2.5 liters of fluid on the first lap and 3.5 liters on our second lap. On the second lap we both ran out of water for a period of time. @@TysRides I noticed that on the second lap that you and Lefty didn't have your hydration vest (at least in some of the shots)..I immediately thought that wasn't going to be good..

      @ericrubin5542 yep. That was my mistake. There were so many of those little sag stops set up with coolers that I thought I would be good. Felt pretty good after the first 55, so I just left the pack. Another lesson learned. When in doubt, wear the pack.

    Went out of a 40 mile ride in KC, almost died with the heat! those miles felt worse than the 100 mile unbound!

      That's what I said to Lefty! We did an old 100 mile route the day of Unbound and it was gravy compared to this!

      Flowy and fast. No switchbacks. Western Colorado is my favorite spot to ride.

    I know it probably came out after this video, but I love my LeMond Prolog AR, the lightest gravel ebike currently for sale at 28lbs. Mahle rear hub, hidden battery in down tube, and carob frame, bars, stem, seatppost. Mahle has less torque than mid drive systems, but it’s a completely normal bike if the battery dies.

    Great review. + a few personal experiences from long races and bikepacking: - get 3 for events like Unbound 200 so your start and each SAG is ready to roll with all hydration, nutrition and supplies. Never forget your night lights again at sag 3… - works well with drink mixes or good to have plain water option with mixes in bottles. Wear under jacket during winter. - doubles as a nap pillow - keeps mosquitoes/flies off your upper back (especially if you spray it) - the bungee straps hold a c-store frozen burrito or winter jacket - the shoulder pockets are great for soft items like chamois butt’r, wet wipes, etc.

      Hell yea! I used it today again and it was great. Yes, two things I left off review. The pockets on shoulders and the bungee cord deal for a jacket. Hadn't used those features yet, so I forgot to mention them, but yes, it's a great pack. Super light and breathable, too.

      Yea, no problem. I've been using the pack a lot recently and love it. So I guess the bungee cord deal on the front is to actually hold a jacket or other clothing. I didn't realize that until after I filmed the video. Makes sense and is kind of a nice feature if you had something you needed to hold that wouldn't fit in the pack itself.

      I’ve watched these packs for many years (?Castle Rock CO?) after Amanda Nauman used one in Unbound, i chose another brand however. Keep crushin !
